17th century FLEMISH school, workshop of Pierre BRUEGHEL the - Lot 10
17th century FLEMISH school, workshop of Pierre BRUEGHEL the Younger The Peasants' Brawl Oak panel, three boards, reinforced. 41,5 x 58,5 cm Crack in the panel. Reprise of the painting by Pierre Brueghel the Younger kept in New-York at the Metropolitain Museum of Art (see G. Marlier, Pierre Brueghel the Younger, Brussels, 1969, fig.158, reproduced). This composition is an original invention of Pierre Brueghel the Elder, but no painting or drawing by him has come down to us. As proof of their existence, the engraving made around 1620 by Lucas Vorsterman provides information: it includes the mention of Peter Brueghel invented as well as a dedication to Pieter Brueghel the Elder (anc.coll. Cohen, London). Moreover, this engraving would have been executed after a drawing of the Peasants' Brawl by Peter-Paul Rubens (a second of which is kept in Rotterdam at the Boymans-van Beuningen Museum). This painting has been the subject of numerous replicas, sometimes taking up the meaning of the engraving or the original meaning of the Rubens drawing. Two medium-sized paintings have been attributed to Pieter Brueghel the Elder and a dozen medium and small sizes to his son.
