Juana ROMANI (1867–1923) - Lot 27
Juana ROMANI (1867–1923) Woman with a Yellow Ribbon, after 1898 Oil on mahogany panel Signed upper right 81 x 64 cm Expert: Marc OTTAVI A true artistic sensation, Juana Romani—born Giovanna Carolina Carlesimo—began her career as a sought-after model for Ferdinand Roybet and Jean-Jacques Henner before making her mark at the Salon as early as 1888, where her talent was immediately recognized. Surrounded by the artists and poets of the Belle Époque, she developed a style of painting deeply influenced by Henner, adopting his enigmatic female figures and the sensuality of his skin tones, while asserting a more embodied and unsettling presence. Her meteoric career, cut short by a psychiatric illness, leaves behind the image of a singular artist who, in just a few years, rose from the status of model to that of an accomplished painter. The Roybet Fould Museum in Courbevoie dedicated an exhibition to her in 2021. We thank Gabriele Romani, the artist’s heir, for the precise dating of the work.
